On Thursday 18th September, 12 Riverside students headed to Lee Valley Athletics Centre for an amazing opportunity with Sky Sports. The school was lucky enough to be selected to be filmed for the programme ‘Games Changers’ which will be broadcast on Sky Sports 1 within the next few weeks. The pupils participated in a sprint master class with current GB sprinter Adam Gemili. Adam Gemili represented Team GB at the 2012 London Olympics and this year he also competed at the Commonwealth Games and European Championships. At the Commonwealth Games he won silver in the 100m in a time of 10.10 and also silver in the 4x100m relay. At the European Championships Adam won gold in the 200m in a time of 19.98 and gold in the 4x100m relay. Adam is still just 20 years old!
Throughout the day pupils learnt about the different stages of the race and top technique points. They also had the opportunity to ask Adam questions as well as get autographs on their shirts. The highlight of the day was watching the pupils take on and beat Adam. Admittedly he may have been jogging and also holding onto his microphone, but nevertheless we can say that our students have beaten a European Champion!!!! The pupils listened to everything that Adam had to say and it was great to see them put what they had learnt into practice.
Well done to all of the students who participated in the event and on behalf of the school a huge thank you to Sky Sports and Adam Gemili.
